CALENDAR OF COMING EVENTS FOR 2024
Sunday, September 22: Scoop of History: 145 Years of the Catholic Church in Sturgis at 2 pm at the St. Francis of Assisi Church Hall in Sturgis. This PowerPoint presentation will be the history of St. Francis Church by Joan Bachmeier.
Saturday, June 15: Eighth annual History Day. Theme will be “1874 Custer Expedition: 150 Years of Exploration, Settlement and Exploitation”. More details here.
Saturday, April 13: Scoop of History: In Nazi Hands, The POW Experience of Sturgis’ 109th Engineers at 1 pm in the Community Room at the Sturgis Public Library. Mark Rambow will present his research about the group of soldiers from the local 109th Engineers, taken as Nazi prisoners of war during the battle of Kasserine Pass, describing their experiences and time in confinement.

Saturday, September 23: 1:00 p.m. Scoop of History: How to Dress Your Soldier – Scoop of History
Lee Stroschine from the Old Fort Meade Museum will be talking about military uniforms that were used at Fort Meade as well as the uniforms that soldiers on the Custer expedition of 1874 wore.
The Historical Society will hold a brief Annual Meeting for membership following the presentation.
June 16-17, 2023: Seventh annual History Days. Our theme will be “Trails of History.” We will celebrate trails of all kinds; from the various wagon trails, pathways, roads and highways, which have brought people and goods to the area for centuries, to the variety of modern trails which exist to bring us closer to our past. We even want to embrace more abstract “trails” which have been used over the years.
Events at the Sturgis Community Center will include:
Friday Reception with Cash Bar (4 pm to 7 pm)
Historical Booths, Saturday (9 am to Noon)
Booths for Reception and Historical Booths will include:
“Trails to St. Martin’s” and “1950’s Kid Trails in Sturgis”
Bismarck, Ft. Pierre, and Cheyenne Trails to Sturgis.
